Investigation Concerning Conditions of Safety Education And Therapists¡¯ Awareness at Special Education Support Centers (Ulsan Area)

Abstract
Objective : The purpose of this study is to understand the conditions of safety education and therapists¡¯ awareness focusing on therapists employed at special education support centers and to suggest their importance.

Method : A survey was conducted targeting therapists employed at special education support centers in Ulsan area from May 2st 2013 to May 31st 2013. A total number of 21 surveys were used for valid data. As for data analysis, SPSS 17.0 version was used to conduct data analysis. Descriptive statistics, a regression analysis, and ANOVA were employed.

Result : More study subjects answered to have experience in safety education in special education support centers and most of them received safety education through university curriculums. Epilepsy and seizure were the most frequent aspects of safety education, while it was pointed out that first aid education lacked the most for safety education. The number of experience in safety accidents mostly ranged from 1~5, while most of the test subjects answered to experience mental damage as the most difficult situation during a safety accident. Safety accidents occurred mostly in therapy rooms, and most of the test subjects answered that the centers were barely equipped with data for safety education. Post-treatment after an safety accident was handled mostly by therapists in charge, and a relationship with parents indicated the most difficult situation while processing a safety accident.

Conclusion : In this study, it was investigated out that 15 therapists (71.4%) have experience safety accidents, while 20 therapists (95.4%) answered that safety education is necessary to prevent safety accidents. To do so, it was investigated that safety education is necessary through regular therapy training held by administrative institutions. Therefore, administrative institutions must provide safety accident prevention education to protect disabled children and therapist alike.
